Our Avalanche Skills Course 1 accredited by the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (who have spent years perfecting it) builds a foundation of knowledge and skills to help you make informed decisions when undertaking backcountry travel through avalanche terrain.  Our instruction team are qualified in avalanche risk management, and are overseen by an IFMGA qualified Mountain Guide, to ensure the quality of your learning is of the highest standard.


The course consists of a three hour theory session in the evening followed by a full day at the Remarkables Ski Field on foot (snowshoes and poles provided). Includes all equipment needed and transport from Basecamp Adventures Queenstown up to the Remarkables return.


AVALANCHE AWARENESS COURSE SKILLS SYLLABUS


  • Introduction to the avalanche phenomenon – snowpack layering, triggers, avalanche types, avalanche sizes.
  • Avalanche terrain – slope angles, aspects, altitude/elevation, trigger points, terrain traps, avalanche terrain exposure scale
  • Conditions – Identifying signs of snow instability
  • Decision making
  • Safe travel techniques
  • Route finding in avalanche terrain
  • Rescue – Avalanche Transceivers, probing, shoveling technique
