Our Avalanche Skills Course 2 is accredited by the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (who have spent years perfecting it) builds upon the foundation of knowledge and skills learnt in ASC1. Our instructors hold Avalanche Risk Management Level 6 (the highest professional avalanche qualification in NZ) and mountain guide qualifications, to ensure the quality of your learning is of the highest standard.

The course is 4 days, meeting at Basecamp Adventures Queenstown each morning at 8.30am. We are running two courses in Winter 2026: one on foot and one on touring equipment. Both courses are suitable for people who have completed ASC1 previously, gained some experience in the backcountry, and are now ready for a deeper understanding of the avalanche phenomenon. It will be taught as a mixture of theory and practical, with emphasis on getting into the snow environment each day to learn.

The 'On Ski/ Splitboard' course will require participants to provide their own touring equipment, which must be in good, working order. This course is perfect for backcountry tourers. You must be familiar with your touring equipment and be comfortable skiing off piste at an intermediate level.
